Welcome to my blog. I'm Robyn. I was born in October '74 (so I don't have to keep upping my age every year.) I'm married to Kris, my military guy that married me, a pagan hippie. I have 4 children, 3 living, I work fulltime as an IT business analyst (aka - computer dork) and I have worked very hard to get out from under obesity. This blog was originally about the weight loss journey, however now it is about my life. After having lost my 2nd child, Anily, during her full term delivery after a perfectly normal pregnancy, I got involved in a group called "Missing Grace". That is a group that helps people through pregnancy and infant loss, infertility, and adoption. Through this group I found an agency that helped me to DO SOMETHING about all the infertility I saw around me every day. I am in the beginning of a surrogacy journey in which I will be the gestational carrier. I've never done this before so I have to admit I don't know all of what I'm about to take on. I guess we'll find out. In the meantime, I'll blog about my life. My stillbirth, parenting, weightloss, maintaining, working, surrogacy, whatever else happens, life.

The Comments saga

I wanted to share with you one of my support tickets opened with Lycos to resolve the fact that people couldn't leave comments on my blog.  I've resolved it myself but you might get a kick out of this.  Hopeless - that is how I rate their support:

This is the second time I have sent this in and yet no one has responded to me. PLEASE get back to me regarding this issue.

The verification code for comments on my blog does NOT work. I've had many people contact me stating they cannot leave a comment due to the verification code NEVER accepting what they type. I've tried it myself and indeed, you can type it in accurately, rearrange the code over and over and still know that you are typing it in accurately, and yet it says it is NOT accurate and won't let you leave a comment. I am a computer science engineer. I work in IT. I am not computer illiterate. My friends are from my college and thus they are also scientists and engineers and IT workers.

As you might imagine, I LIKE getting comments on my blog. If I cannot get comments, I will not keep my blog here. I've been considering paying the extra so that I can get traffic stats as well but I will simply find somewhere to move my blog all-together if I cannot get comments.

This is something that you need to fix. personally, I think it has something to do with your upper and lower case letters not looking different enough, but I am not certain. Sometimes I can get it to work and other times I cannot. Having the actual code behind the application to look at obviously puts you at an advantage to fix this so please do so. Soon.

Thank you,
Robyn Thanghe

Thank you for contacting Lycos support.

We apologize for your frustration in this matter.

The error message you are receiving is generated because the CAPTCHA feature has timed out. The CAPTCHA feature currently has a 2 minute time out limit. We are working on changing the limit. For now this can be resolved by clicking on the button that says "I can't read this" and a new image will be generated. This will restart the CAPTCHA time out limit.

Sorry for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

Should you have any additional questions please let us know so that we can assist you further.

Hi.

Thank you, but that is not the issue. We are typing in the code right away and if it doesn't work, we have hit 'I can't read this' and retried also right away. It still does not work. I can promise you that we are not taking anywhere near 2 minutes. I've tried, clicked "I cannot read this" to rearrange the letters, tried, clicked, tried, clicked, tried - over and over - possibly 10 times ALL 10 being within the 2 minutes.

That is not the solution - please try again.

OK, I've just checked on the comments. I left it sit for over 2 minutes... which was crazy long but I'll go with you. It popped up the "please check your verification code" message and did not let me leave the comment. There is no "I cannot read this" think to click, however the instructions say to click the image with the verification code in it to re-display the code if you are having troubles reading it. I did that and hit submit right away but it still popped up "Please check your verification code" on me. No matter how many times I clicked the image it still gave me the pop-up and would not allow me to post the comment.

Hello.

This is not a work around. There is no "I cannot read this" button to click. We can only click the image to have it redisplay the code but it does NOT prevent the pop-up "Please check your verification code." when you do that.

Do you have either a better work around or an estimated date of availability on the fix? It is quite frustrating to not have any comments.

Thank you

As before, just trying to rate the support for the issue. I don't need a ticket opened but perhaps you do as the rating thing doesn't seem to be working.

The support for the comments on my blog issue was timely, sort of, since it was the second request I'd sent in about 2 weeks. However the response gave instructions that were inaccurate and the 'I can't read this' button doesn't exist and it does not resolve the issue.

I was rating it as bad.

Thanks

Thank you for contacting Lycos support,

Lycos implemented and requires CAPTCHA functionality on all blogs
This added security will help reduce a vast majority of the automated spam comments added to blogs.
The CAPTCHA feature requires "real" people to enter a verification code, before submitting their comments.

Please try again. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Should you have any additional questions please let us know so that we can assist you further.

Hello Raven.

Thank you for explaining why you need the CAPTCHA functionality on all blogs. I very much appriciate not having spam comments on my blog.

This does not, however, answer to the issue that not even "real" people can leave comments because even entering the correct combination of numbers and letters with case counting, they still are told that they were not correct and they are blocked from commenting.

In fact, I do not understand how anyone could read this issue from me, then read the comment about timing out and the mythical "I can't read this" button, THEN read my response about how there is no "I can't read this" button, and THEN respond back as if I had asked in passing why the CAPTCHA functionality needed to be there and as if it is working and I'm not being banned from ever getting a comment. I do hope that the customer support group does routinely read the support requests in full before responding to them.

In case that is not the case I will summarize. The security code on my site is not working. There is no work around. People cannot leave comments.

Thank you.

Thank you for contacting Lycos support,

I'm so sorry you're having trouble registering

There should be a red button at the bottom of the registration page that says "I Agree". (You may have to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page to see it.) Clicking that button registers you for Gamesville. If you cannot see that red button at the bottom of the screen, there may be a browser incompatibility issue.

To help us identify the problem please reply with:
• Which browser and browser version, are you using (Ex: Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 2, Safari, etc.)?
• Who is your Internet Service Provider? (Ex: AOL, Comcast, Verizon, etc.)
• Do you have security software or antivirus software on your computer that acts as a pop-up blocker or a firewall (Ex: Norton, McAfee, etc.)?
• What operating system are you using? (Ex: Microsoft Vista, Microsoft XP Home Edition, Macintosh, etc.)

Should you have any additional questions please let us know so that we can assist you further.

Raven,

I am trying to decide if you possibly drink or take drugs while answering your support pages. It is either that, or you are all sitting around playing with my head trying to answer these in the most insane way possible.

I am not having trouble registering. If this is not, in fact, a prank, I believe you must have sent the answer for some OTHER person to me.

*I* was having trouble because people could not leave comments on my blog. Actually, I've resovled my own issue because when you go to the 'edit your blog' page there is an way that you can remove the security code requirement for comments. Funny how you said further up in this thread that you couldn't do that. If you would like me to write out detailed instuctions on how to do this so that you can provide accurate responses in case anyone else asks this type of question, please feel free to ask.

For the record, I have been toying with purchasing an upgrade to my account for a few months now. In fact, I would've done it a long time ago but the link for it wasn't working and no one would answer my support ticket regarding how to pay for the upgrade. Absolutely beyond reason putrid bad support however, has had a strong effect on those thoughts. Might I suggest someone taking the lead to improve this effort a bit?

Thanks for... well.. not really much. Wasting my time, I guess. Thanks for that.

-Robyn
